Department of Education and Training
The protection of the environment is a key policy initiative of the Department of Education and Training (DET). The 2009-2013 DET Strategic Plan lists environmental sustainability as one of the six values for the department.
- DET Earth Smart Environmental Sustainability Strategic Plan 2008-2012 - this strategic plan outlines the following goals and targets on environmental sustainability for schools to aim for:
- reducing school waste to landfill by 50 per cent
- conserving water use in schools by 15 per cent
- improving energy efficiency in schools by up to 30 per cent
- increasing biodiversity in the school grounds.
- Queensland Environmentally Sustainable Schools Initiative (QESSI) Alliance Strategic Plan 2008-10 - this document has been approved by the QESSI Alliance Steering Committee, which is a cross-sector governance group for sustainable schools program providers.
- Statement on Sustainability for all Queensland Schools - Enough for all forever (new window)
, endorsed by Education Queensland, Queensland Catholic Education Commission and Independent Schools Queensland, was released in Parliament in March 2008. The statement encourages schools to approach sustainability through 'curriculum that is developed and delivered on the principles of environmental education for sustainability'.
