The Queensland Government $60 million solar and energy efficiency program involves the installation of solar panels and other energy efficiency measures in all Queensland state schools and centres by the end of 2011.
2Kw solar system will be installed in all state schools and outdoor and environmental education centres not already accessing solar power. Energy efficiency measures in state schools and centres include improved lighting technology to reduce electricity consumption.
The project will also deliver reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and
energy usage of at least 30 per cent, supporting the State's Strategic Energy
Efficiency Policy.
A key feature of the program will be new 'Smart meters' to measure energy
being consumed by each school. This will enable all Queensland state school
students to learn more about solar power and energy efficiency through the Solarschools.net website.
An online unit of work called Fuelling our Futures is available for year 7 students focussing on the development of a whole School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) with an emphasis on the energy component.
Students are encouraged to measure a baseline of energy use, develop strategies to reduce energy consumption, implement their plan and evaluate its effectiveness.
It can be accessed through Education Queensland's Learning
Place.
