Year of Environmental Sustainability Challenges

YES Challenges - Start planning now!

Throughout 2010, students will be able to explore and develop solutions to a range of environmental issues through the Year of Environmental Sustainability (YES) Challenges.

These challenges across the themes of energy, waste, water and biodiversity will run concurrently during Terms 1, 2 and 3.

All schools throughout Queensland are invited to participate in the YES Challenges in the following age categories:

Regions will feature leading challenge entries and other presentations in their regional YES symposiums and will be invited to select one presentation per region to present as ClimateSmart Environmental Ambassadors at the culminating State YES Symposium in Brisbane in October 2010. The ClimateSmart Environmental Ambassadors will be a group of five students and two teachers from one school and will need to be from Year Five upwards.

Challenge 1 - Tell your digital story

Students will be challenged to, 'Tell your digital story' of environmental sustainability via an online e-book. This challenge will help to uncover the great work already happening in schools and communities across Queensland and will profile new approaches to sustainability in their region.

Selected digital stories will be featured on the YES website.

Challenge 2 - One thing, one day at a time

Students will develop a community activity focused on sustainability in their local area. The 'One thing, one day at a time' challenge will involve students working collaboratively with their local community to identify and address a local sustainability issue.

Challenge 3 - The next big idea

Are your students always thinking of new inventions? 'The next big idea' challenge focuses on developing technological innovations to reduce our ecological footprint. Student may choose to focus on the schools ecological footprint, their own or the planet!

Participants will be encouraged to be as inventive as possible in designing solutions to a range of environmental challenges.
