Welcome to the Queensland public service
Voice over:
Queensland is a great place to live and work and holiday and bring up a family and settle down for life.
All of which makes this State a very popular destination.
Given that popularity, it's not surprising Queensland welcomes thousands of new arrivals each week.
And like everyone else in the State, each of these new arrivals is looking for comfort and security.
The task of looking after all these people is constantly growing.
This help, support, protection and inspiration needs to happen around the clock and around the State.
So, who fine tunes the present and shapes the future for Queensland?
Certainly the Parliament, the Government Executive and the Judiciary create laws, pass them and enforce them.
However, it's the Public Sector team who work where the system meets the people.
And it is the quality of this interaction that will greatly impact the quality and direction of everyday life in this State.
And that's where you come in.
Whatever role you're taking on, you now have the opportunity to work in an ethical and respectful environment where you can help, inspire, encourage, manage and support.
And that contribution will be very, very welcome.
Anna Bligh, Premier of Queensland:
You are joining the State's single largest employer and you are now part of a team of some 230,000 workers spread right across the length and breadth of Queensland.
It's a team that's bigger than the combined workforces of Coles and Woolworths Australia-wide.
Every day, this team works hard to provide the essential services the people of Queensland need.
And I value each and every employee.
On the frontline we have health workers in our hospitals, teachers in our schools and police and emergency service workers helping people every day.
We have scientists and farmers working in primary industries, men and women building the roads, schools and hospitals that we need for a fast growing State.
People working to look after the most vulnerable in our community, like the young, people with a disability and the elderly.
People working to increase our exports and trade opportunities to strengthen the State's economy.
People working on our cabinet and legislative processes and who provide timely and effective briefing advice to their Departments and their Ministers.
People providing IT and admin support for the thousands of issues that come to us each and every week.
Every single one of these jobs and thousands more just like them, are the cogs that keep the wheels of Queensland turning.
And they all make a difference.
Queensland is the fastest growing state in Australia.
More than 2,200 people make their home here every week.
Our population will more than double to 8 million in less than fifty years.
So one of the challenges that Government faces is to plan for and stay ahead of that growth while holding on to the Queensland that we love, protecting our environment and our lifestyle and building a strong economy for the future.
These things too are a part of our job.
Our Government is committed to creating a Queensland that is strong, green, smart, healthy and fair.
And every single action our Government takes is based on at least one or more of these priorities.
As you take up your new roles, please know that you have the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of Queenslanders.
This is a great place to work.
Some of you may know that I too worked in the public service before entering the Queensland Parliament.
It gave me a first hand knowledge of how the Queensland Public Service works and an ongoing respect for its place in our democracy.
It regularly sets the benchmarks for workplaces in areas such as professional development and supporting work life balance.
In return, the people of Queensland ask for and deserve your best efforts.
So again, on behalf of your team-mates in the Queensland Government, welcome to the Queensland Public Service.
Thank you for joining our team.
I wish you all the best for a very long and successful career with us.
Thank you.
