Director-General's message

Welcome to the 2012-2016 strategic plan for the Department of Education, Training and Employment.

This plan reflects our department's ongoing commitment to provide high quality services to Queenslanders.

It also reflects the department's contribution to the government's objectives for the community, and the key strategies that will help us to achieve those objectives. Importantly, the plan highlights the important transitions that people make throughout their lives from early childhood education and care, through school education, and into training, higher education, and employment.

In the education sector, the Strategic Plan should be read in conjunction with United in our pursuit of excellence which outlines the focus for improvement in our schools. During the life of this plan, Year 7 will become the first year of high school in Queensland. Moving Year 7 is a significant reform that will benefit students at all Queensland schools.

Skills development remains critical to support Queensland's economic growth. Working with industry to ensure that training meets industry's needs will help to achieve the government's target of four per cent unemployment within six years, and support the growth of a four pillar economy based on tourism, agriculture, resources and construction.

The addition of employment functions to the department in 2012 will help us to deliver a comprehensive and coordinated suite of education, training and employment services to ensure Brighter Futures for all Queenslanders.

Consultation on the Draft Department of Education, Training and Employment 2013-2017 Strategic Plan

The Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) Strategic Plan sets out the department's four-year strategic direction and reflects our ongoing commitment to providing high quality education and skilling services to Queenslanders.

Each year the department reviews and updates the plan. As part of this process, we invite input from our stakeholders into the draft DETE 2013 - 2017 Strategic Plan 547k and Strategic Plan 2013 - 2017 Summary 222k.
