About TAFE Queensland - Anything's Possible

At TAFE Queensland it's our mission to help you on your pathway to greater possibilities, whether in your career, your business, or your life.

TAFE Q has an extensive range of education and training programs available to just about every walk of life - all ages, all backgrounds and all vocations.

With over 120 years of history, a network of institutes, over 100 campuses and 800 programs, TAFE Queensland is the largest most experienced provider of vocational education, training and adult learning in Australia's smart state, Queensland.

There are 11 institutes and two statutory TAFE institutes, within the TAFE Queensland network, delivering a wide range of nationally recognised courses at more than 80 metropolitan and regional locations across the state.

TAFE is the largest provider of practical, relevant and quality Vocational Education Training (VET) in Queensland. In 2009-10, the TAFE Queensland network delivered educational excellence to some 230 000 students.

TAFE Queensland courses are available through an extensive network of institutes via a range of delivery modes including traditional classroom delivery, distance learning, online and workplace training.

Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE

The Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE (BRIT) provides VET to more than 12 600 local, interstate and international students who are enrolled in over 200 training programs, ranging from Certificate through to Advanced Diploma. BRIT's program offerings include a range of trades, business, health and community, hospitality, retail, tourism and Indigenous studies, which reflect demands from local industry and needs of the community.

BRIT is focused on addressing priority skills needs for existing workers as identified by local industry, and on skilling the future workforce through pre-apprenticeship programs and new pathways to employment. In partnership with schools, BRIT provides a highly successful VET in schools program designed to improve youth transition to apprenticeships and employment outcomes.

Brisbane North Institute of TAFE

Brisbane North Institute of TAFE (BNIT) provides training delivery across nearly 300 qualifications through five key campuses, and its unique business units of TAFE Open Learning (TOL) and Learning Network Queensland (LNQ).

BNIT delivers training to approximately 36 000 students. The key training focus includes specific vocational areas such as information technology, business, horticulture, finance, and blended and distributed learning. As the lead institute in these areas, BNIT leads and coordinates development of relevant learning products and services throughout Queensland.

Central Queensland Institute of TAFE

Located in one of Australia's fastest growing regions, where the rapid development of the resource sector demands highly skilled staff, both trades and professional, Central Queensland Institute of TAFE (CQIT) is focused on engaging with industry and meeting the training needs of a workforce that will drive a booming economy.

Covering an area of more than 360 000 square kilometres with nine campuses, CQIT provides vocational education and training to more than 20 500 local, interstate and international students who are enrolled in over 220 training programs, ranging from Certificate to Advanced Diploma level. The institute provides training in key vocational areas such as engineering, construction, business and community services, and is the lead institute for training in mining, chemical processing and laboratory operations. Each year, over 5000 apprentices and 400 trainees receive training through CQIT.

Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE

Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE (MSIT) is one of Queensland's largest providers of state-funded VET. The institute raises the aspirations, potential and skills of all clients through delivery of quality education and training. In 2009-10, MSIT educated over 21 000 students and delivered 250 programs across nine campuses in Brisbane's southern suburbs.

Strong links to industry and business and consideration of client needs ensure MSIT's programs are job-focused, industry-linked and globally connected. By continuing to respond to external markets and environments, MSIT is actively supporting government priorities. Emphasis is placed on the delivery of higher level qualifications (Certificate IV and above) to ensure students maximise their learning potential, enabling them to meet the needs of the local community.

Mount Isa Institute of TAFE

With campuses in Mount Isa, Normanton and Cloncurry, Mount Isa Institute of TAFE delivers nationally recognised and accredited VET to north-west Queensland. The institute focuses on several key development areas, with a wide range of remote area delivery options, an ever-increasing scope of subject areas, and ongoing quality improvement.

Mount Isa Institute of TAFE delivers training to over 1500 students in various industries, including community services, child care, business, management, construction (civil construction), and literacy and numeracy.

Through a close association with the industry sector, Mount Isa Institute of TAFE develops relevant delivery strategies to provide training that stimulates increased employment and addresses identified skill shortages in the mining, manufacturing, and building and construction industries.

SkillsTech Australia

SkillsTech Australia is the lead TAFE institute and largest public provider of trade and technician training in Queensland and Australia. The development and delivery of training for key industries covers automotive, building and construction, electrical and electronics, manufacturing and engineering, and sustainable technologies.

SkillsTech Australia - a key component of the government's $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan and part of the multifaceted response to Queensland's skills shortages - aims to modernise the way trade and technician training is delivered throughout the state.

The institute provides over 120 training programs including school-based programs, pre- and post-apprenticeship training, diplomas, advanced diplomas, licensing and, of course, traineeships and apprenticeships. SkillsTech Australia continues to provide training to meet the needs of industry, having trained more than 21 000 domestic and international students, at the 31 March 2010.

Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE

Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE is the largest provider of practical, relevant and quality education and training in south-west Queensland, delivering educational excellence through a suite of 300 programs to over 19 000 students across a catchment area covering one-third of the state.

The Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE has a strong focus on working with industry to increase productivity through growing the number of people engaged in workplace training. This has particular significance for the emerging workforce within the Surat Energy Basin, where the institute is working actively to provide Coal Seam Gas/Liquid Natural Gas and soft infrastructure training to meet industry and community needs.

Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE

Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE (SCIT) has firmly established a strong reputation for the quality of its education and training for industries, individuals and communities. SCIT is considered to be the premier provider of vocational education and training in the Sunshine Coast region. With an extensive outreach network, SCIT is delivering programs on campus and in the workplace and has established itself as a regional, national and international market leader.

SCIT delivered training to more than 15 000 students during 2009-10.

SCIT is a lead institute for sport and recreation, arts and entertainment and child care, and values itself on innovative and creative teachers, exceptional real work facilities and equipment, great support services for customers, and extensive links with business, industry bodies and individual employers.

The Bremer Institute of TAFE

The Bremer Institute of TAFE (TBIT) is the major training provider to industry and communities in the Greater Ipswich, Brisbane West and Lockyer regions. The region is facing unprecedented population and industry growth, and TBIT is well positioned to help businesses develop capacity through skills into the future.

In 2009-10, TBIT provided education and training for approximately 13 000 students across a broad range of program areas at three campuses, in the workplace, or online to students located throughout Queensland.

During 2009-10, TBIT continued to develop strong links with organisations within the civil construction, health and community services, and rail transport industries, along with school, university and government sectors.

Tropical North Institute of TAFE

Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE is located in Far North Queensland and provides vocational education and training to more than 15 000 local, interstate and international students enrolled in over 220 training programs ranging from certificate through to diploma level. These training disciplines include Indigenous training, tourism, hospitality, sustainability, marine, health and community services.

Covering an area of 268 000 square kilometres and incorporating 18 local government areas, Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE's campuses are located at Cairns, Innisfail, Tully, Mareeba, Atherton, Mossman, Weipa, Thursday Island and Bamaga.

Wide Bay Institute of TAFE

As part of the TAFE Queensland Regional Network, Wide Bay Institute of TAFE provides vocational education and training to more than 11 000 local, interstate and international students enrolled in over 220 training programs ranging from certificate to advanced diploma level.

Covering an area of over 45 000 square kilometres and incorporating five local government areas, Wide Bay Institute of TAFE's campuses are located at Bundaberg, Gympie, Maryborough, Hervey Bay, and in Brisbane at Browns Plains.

Wide Bay Institute, as a member of the TAFE Queensland Network, has lead institute responsibility for retail, security and forestry. Over the last 12 months, Wide Bay Institute has entered into a range of new qualifications including civil construction, warehousing, water and massage therapy, and diversified in the area of health.

TAFE Open Learning (distance delivery)

TAFE Open Learning is the brand for off-campus or distance delivery. Four TAFE Queensland institutes - known as TAFE Open Learning program providers - provide course materials, teaching and learning services. TAFE Open Learning enables potential students to access a single point of contact for information and enrolment into these study programs.

TAFE Open Learning's educational partners are:

  • Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE
  • Brisbane North Institute of TAFE
  • SkillsTech Australia
  • Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE.

Demographic comparison data shows recent growth in regional and international enrolments. Currently, 35 per cent of programs are delivered online, 25 per cent blended and 40 per cent remain predominantly print-based programs. Hours enrolled through TAFE Open Learning have increased by 40 per cent this financial year.
