Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan

In April 2010, the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA) endorsed the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan (2010 - 2014) Adobe PDF document External Link

The national Action Plan outlines actions that will be undertaken at the national, state and local level to close the gap between the educational outcomes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. These actions are linked to six priority domain areas that evidence shows will have the most impact on closing the gap:

These priority areas align well with those of the Department's Closing the Gap Education Strategy Adobe PDF document 1.9M The Action Plan largely brings together existing commitments made through other key reforms like the National Indigenous Reform Agreement (NIRA) and Smarter Schools National Partnerships There are also some new commitments.

The Action Plan is for all schools and sectors. Each state and territory has identified a list of focus schools Adobe PDF document 83k to implement specific actions. Focus schools are those schools with Indigenous primary school students with the greatest need and where efforts should be focussed to make the greatest difference.

In Queensland, there are 204 state schools, 18 catholic schools and 7 independent schools that have been identified as 'focus schools' using the three-tier process specified in the Action Plan. The 204 state schools cater for over 16,600 Indigenous primary school students from across all seven DET regions.
