Closing the Gap-Expansion of intensive literacy and numeracy initiative

In November 2010 the Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett announced the Australian Government's commitment of $24 million nationally during 2011 - 2013 to fund projects aimed at halving the gap in reading, writing and numeracy achievement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children by 2018. Queensland secured $6.3 million for three projects:

• Principals as Literacy Leaders with Indigenous Communities
• Moving Together and
• Bridging the Language Gap

These projects expand on existing successful approaches to teaching and learning literacy and numeracy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and will contribute to building an evidence base of innovative literacy and numeracy approaches, They will be implemented over the next two years in both government and non-government schools and will predominantly target Queensland focus schools 83k identified under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan
