Deadly Science; Connecting to Country

Deadly Science; Connecting to Country involves the delivery of the Certificate III Land Care Management (Indigenous Land Management) for students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait origin. It intends to provide students with instruction and experience in marketable skills in conservation and land management with emphasis on traditions of bush knowledge from local Aboriginal Elders and Indigenous facilitators. In addition, it focuses on the immense importance of developing Australians who are proud of their past and present heritage. The Certificate III level qualification provides an introduction to scientific concepts and pathways to employment, traineeships and tertiary study.

This program seeks to improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people specifically in the area of Science. In part, this will be achieved through the development and implementation of a senior phase (Years 11 and 12) model that will inform teaching practices nationally in regard to embedding Indigenous perspectives in science education. It aims to significantly impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student engagement and attainment in education, specifically science, and increase pathways to post-school options. It is a key component in a wider P-12 strategy to increase engagement, participation, attainment and pathways in science and science related industries for Indigenous young people.
