NAIDOC Week - July 5-12, 2009 - is an opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians.
The theme for NAIDOC Week 2009 is "Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth".
The Department honours the traditional owners of the land on which we teach and learn and the Elders who possess and pass on their knowledge to the younger generations.
In our schools and TAFE institutes, teachers, teacher aides and support staff - Indigenous and non-Indigenous - nurture Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are part of the Department's commitment to acknowledge, recognise and value Indigenous histories and cultures, nurture and value Indigenous leadership and staff and embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in all aspects of schooling and training.
We are focused on "closing the gap" in outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and to make a measurable improvement in workforce capacity.
