National Alliance for Remote Indigenous Schools (NARIS) - new approach Recently, representatives from the Northern Territory, Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales and South Australia formed the National Alliance for Remote Indigenous Schools (NARIS). This is the first time that a partnership of this nature - dedicated to improving the education and life outcomes of students in remote locations in Australia - has been formed. The NARIS will involve a joint recruitment, common orientation and induction, and shared professional development strategies for teachers and school leaders in remote regions.
The overall aim of the NARIS is to improve distribution of teachers and school leaders in remote Indigenous communities across Australia. This work will complement other strategies designed to improve living standards and opportunities through the low SES program, National Partnerships and the Northern Territory Government Emergency Response. Other agencies are also committed to this important area which creates further capacity to impact positively on life choices for those living in remote communities.
To progress the NARIS initiative, Queensland hosted a Leaders' Conference held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 20 to 21 June 2011. The conference was a one and a half day conference and a dinner on Monday evening to facilitate networking opportunities. The conference targeted leaders in Indigenous education who are able to leverage their connections to generate advocacy for improved conditions and benefits for teachers and principals in remote Indigenous schools.
