Improved educator to child ratios requirements

As of 1 January 2012, long day care and kindergarten services across the country are required to implement the same ratio for children aged birth to 24 months that Queensland services have provided for the past decade - one (1) educator for every four (4) children.

For family day care services, the existing ratio of one (1) educator for every seven (7) children continues, but from 1 January 2014 each service will need to include the educator's own children aged under 13 years in the ratio (if there is no other adult present to care for them).

The most substantial changes to Queensland educator to child ratios occurs on 1 January 2016, when long day care and kindergarten services will be required to meet a ratio of one (1) educator for every five (5) children aged 25 to 35 months, and 1 educator for every 11 children aged 36 months to school age.

A concession to these ratios is available for services licensed prior to 1 January 2011 to continue to apply a ratio of one (1) educator for every five (5) for a mixed-age group of children aged 15 to 35 months. Services that can demonstrate the need to use this ratio will be able to apply to the Department of Education and Training.

Existing educator to child ratios will continue to apply to outside school hours care.
