Current qualification requirements

Approved qualifications

Prior to 2012, qualification requirements to work in early childhood were attached to specific educator roles including director, early childhood teacher, group leader, assistant, family day care educator, family day care coordinator or outside school hours care coordinator.

The Child Care Act 2002 required licensees to ensure that all non-teaching educators hold a 1 year, 2 year, or 3 year approved qualification, depending on the position in which they are engaged to work. From 1 January 2012, these requirements changed under the National Quality Framework (NQF). The changes to qualification requirements are detailed in the National Quality Framework - Key changes for Queensland fact sheet Adobe PDF document.

Services out of scope of the National Quality Framework will continue to meet qualification requirements under the Child Care Act 2002.

As early childhood teaching qualifications were not legislated in Queensland under the Child Care Act 2002, the Department of Education and Training has established a list of approved teacher qualifications required to deliver an approved kindergarten program. You can view the current qualifications on the Kindergarten Teacher Requirements page. Individuals who received a kindergarten teacher recognition letter

The determination and publication of approved Certificate III, Diploma, early childhood teaching and first aid qualifications is now undertaken by the national Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). A list of the nationally approved qualifications External Link is available on the ACECQA website.

Determination of qualifications

If a qualification does not appear on ACECQA's list of approved qualifications, a person or educational institution can apply to ACECQA to have a qualification determined.

An application for determination of a qualification can be made using the form on the ACECQA website Adobe PDF document External Link. For qualifications obtained overseas additional information may be required.

If you are seeking approval of a qualification for employment in one of the small number of service excluded from the NQF and continuing to be licenced under the Child Care Act 2002, please call the Department of Education and Training directly on 1300 369 935 for further information.
