The Queensland Government recognises that some children may benefit from starting a kindergarten program at a later age or completing a second year of a kindergarten program.
Delayed entry to kindergarten refers to the circumstances whereby a child older than kindergarten age (four by 30 June in the year they participate in a kindergarten program) can be approved for enrolment in a kindergarten program.
Delayed exit means that a child can be approved to participate in an approved kindergarten program for a second year.
The options for delayed entry and delayed exit are intended for children who are likely to have a developmental and/or educational benefit from starting kindergarten later and/or completing a second year of a kindergarten program.
The following information is a guide for central governing bodies (CGBs) and early childhood education and care (ECEC) services regarding the application, assessment and approval of delayed entry and delayed exit enrolments for children in approved kindergarten programs.
