Consultation on proposed changes to the Building Code of Australia (BCA), including changes to ensure consistency with the National Quality Framework in 2012, has now closed.
The changes to the BCA, which may take effect from May 2012, seek to develop a consistent approach across states and territories with regards to the physical environment of education and care services.
The BCA only applies to new buildings or new refurbishments or upgrades and only comes into effect at the Building Application approval stage. As such, the BCA will not apply retrospectively to existing buildings, and will therefore not place requirements on existing services except, potentially, where the service refurbishes or upgrades a relevant component of its building.
Changes have been proposed to areas such as the definition of an early childhood centre, toilets and bathing facilities, nappy changing facilities, window heights, kitchen and fencing (perimeter only).
