Educator to child ratios - Long day care and kindergarten services

The following materials were provided to attendees during the October - November National Quality Framework information sessions. They have been uploaded as an online resource for services wishing to workshop these concepts internally. 

The education, health, safety and wellbeing of children are paramount factors when applying ratios.

Under the National Regulations:

This allows greater flexibility for services to innovatively configure service staffing and apply mixed age ratios across the service.

1 Educator

Initial group

1 x 26 mth child and
2 x 32 mth children

Additional group

3 x 25 mth to prior to Prep aged children

1 x 0-24 mth child

In the above example, the youngest child falls into the >24-35 months category, so the ratio of 1:6 applies for children in the same age group or above. However, if a younger child were included, then the lower ratio would apply (1:4).

Educator to child ratios are no longer the only consideration in determining appropriate staffing in a service. Services will need to ensure that:
