Definitions of early childhood services

Centre-based services

Long day care

Long day care services provide care and education for children from birth to school age, including before and after school care, depending on the individual service. Services generally operate for at least 10 hours a day from Monday to Friday for a minimum of 48 weeks each year.

Read the changes for long day care fact sheet to find out how the National Quality Framework (NQF) impacts on long day care services.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten services generally operate for six hours on school days during school terms and provide care and education for children in the year before they attend full-time school.

Read the changes for kindergarten services fact sheet to find out how the NQF impacts on kindergarten services.

Limited hours care and occasional care

Limited hours care and occasional care centres primarily provide care and education on a casual or ad hoc basis for short periods of time for children from birth to school age.

The Queensland Government funds limited hours care centres to provide care in a range of settings for up to 30 children at any one time and operate for no more than 20 hours per week. Occasional care centres are purpose-built education and care centres and generally operate for up to nine hours per day and 48 weeks per year.

Funded limited hours care and occasional care services are excluded from the scope of the NQF at this stage and will continue to be licensed under the Child Care Act 2002 and the Child Care Regulation 2003. Visit the out-of-scope services page to find out more about proposed development of new legislation to cover services that are currently licensed but which are excluded from the NQF.

Outside school hours care

Outside school hours care (OSHC) is provided for school age children before and after school and as vacation care for at least four weeks per year.

Read the changes for outside school hours care fact sheet to find out how the NQF impacts on OSHC services.

Pre-Prep

Pre-Prep programs are education and care programs offered to children in the year before they attend full-time school on school sites.

Pre-Prep programs are delivered in 35 Indigenous communities via the Queensland Government's Bound for Success initiative. For more information visit the Pre-Pep page.

From 1 January 2011, pre-Prep programs will fall under the National Quality Framework.

Family day care

Family day care services, otherwise known as home-based care, offer education and care in the private homes of registered carers through a family day care scheme. Family day care educators are monitored and supported by the scheme's coordination unit. A group of educators operate under one service approval through the scheme. Limits apply to the number of children in care who can be cared for in a home.

Read the changes for family day care fact sheet to find out how the NQF impacts on family day care services.
