Early Learning and Care Centres

The Department of Education and Training is working with the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to establish four Early Learning and Care Centres in Queensland.

The first centre has opened at Amberley with three more being established in Cairns, Townsville and Gladstone in partnership with the Queensland Government. A fifth centre is being opened in Weipa by the Australian Government. These areas were selected based on their ongoing need for additional and affordable early childhood education and care.

The Australian Government has provided over $9 million to establish the five centres with the final four due to be operational in 2011.

The Australian Government also funded the establishment of an autism specific early learning and care centre in 2010 by AEIOU and Griffith University. This service provides early learning programs and specific support to children aged 0 to 6 years with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The program guidelines and fact sheets about the Early Learning and Care Centres initiatives are available on the Australian Government's early childhood website External Link.
