LEAD Childcare - Kedron Park Road is a well established long day care centre caring for up to 75 children.
Prior to the introduction of the Queensland Kindergarten Funding Scheme, kindy-age children attending the centre were cared for by a two-year qualified Group Leader in a room catering for children aged 3 to 5 years.
Following approval to participate in the 2010 Pilot Kindergarten Program, the centre's management team recruited a qualified teacher to deliver the kindergarten program. The teacher had previously worked in child care while studying and her knowledge of the sector and enthusiasm for teaching has seen her make a positive impact on the centre as a whole, as well as on children participating in the kindergarten program.
The centre's kindergarten program is offered Monday to Friday for 7.5 hours a day. The children enrolled in the kindergarten program can be cared for from 6.30am to 6.30pm as required by their families. Outside of the kindergarten program hours, children are cared for by other members of the centre staff.
Most children accessing the kindergarten program do so for more than the minimum requirement of 15 hours per week. As the kindergarten program is being run in the room catering for 3 to 5 year olds, a small number of younger children are enjoying early exposure to a kindergarten program. According to feedback from parents, children participating in the kindergarten program are thriving and have found a new level of learning in attending the centre. Educators from the centre's other rooms have also been inspired by the kindergarten program to develop new activities for children to enjoy.
The additional funding received from the Queensland Government is being used to purchase additional age-appropriate resources for the kindergarten program and to develop a specific area for use by the class. The funding will also be used to provide additional learning experiences for the children such as music, art and dance sessions.
