Reading to Children Program

The Reading to Children Program is a universal early language and literacy program for children under school age delivered by parents, carers and volunteers, particularly seniors and grandparents.

The Reading to Children Program is delivered in 15 locations across the state, and aims to:

The Carpentaria Shire Council delivers the 'Normanton Kids are Deadly Kids' program in the Normanton community and The Smith Family delivers their 'Let's Read' program in the following 14 locations:

  3. Brisbane North
  4. Ipswich
  5. Caboolture-Pine Rivers
  6. Sunshine Coast
  7. Darling Downs
  8. Townsville-Thuringowa
  9. Fitzroy/Central West
  10. Mackay/Whitsunday
  11. Widebay-Burnett
  12. Far North Queensland
  13. Cape York
  14. Torres Strait

The Let's Read program is designed to encourage parents/carers to have fun reading with young children (aged 4 months, 12 months, 18 months and 3.5 years). As part of the Let's Read program, children and their parents participate in reading sessions with either a trained volunteer, or a community professional with whom they have an existing relationship. The parents and children receive a Let's Read pack including an instructional DVD and tip sheets as well as a copy of one of the great early childhood books such as 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' or 'Dear Zoo'.
