Age appropriate pedagogies

Effective pedagogy and practice is one of the five action areas described in the Supporting successful transitions: school decision-making tool Adobe PDF document4.3M.

Using age-appropriate pedagogies in the early years of schooling is important in supporting children to be actively engaged, creative and successful learners.

In 2015, the department funded Griffith University to conduct the age-appropriate pedagogies for the early years pilot. Griffith University prepared a foundation paper outlining key messages from a review of international research to inform the approach to be taken in conducting the Age appropriate pedagogies pilot.

The pilot, based on the key characteristics of effective early years teaching and learning as identified in international research, supported 46 Queensland schools in Central Queensland, Far North Queensland and Metropolitan regions, in implementing evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning in the early years. Participating teachers were supported to promote active, learner-focused and creative learning experiences in their Prep classrooms.

In 2016, the pilot has been extended to a statewide program to complement the department's transition to school initiative with its focus on continuity of learning for young children.
