The department maintains 936 primary schools (Prep to Year 7), 82 schools (Prep to Year 10-12), 176 high schools (including two Queensland Academies), 47 special schools, 13 TAFE institutes delivering training from 95 locations and 46 early childhood centres plus 81 kindergarten sites, currently operating a total of 90 kindergarten services across the state. This asset base is constantly upgraded and improved to continue to deliver quality learning facilities for state education.
The development of the Design Standards for Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) Facilities will assist in the future provision of more flexible educational facilities through contemporary and consistent design objectives. The objectives include specific design principles to be observed by project design teams and delivery professionals.
These specific design standards set the framework for ordered and responsive actions in the delivery of innovative and cost effective educational facilities. They are to form part of a suite of briefing documents that will include more specific Education Services and Project Facility Briefs designed to drive the timely development of DETE facilities.
Through a process of continuous review of design guidance and facility performance assessment, the department's capital works program will produce, in consultation with educational service delivery professionals, significantly improved and valued educational facility outcomes.
The Design Standards for DETE Facilities are maintained and periodically updated by revised versions to current DETE Standards by the Strategy, Research and Performance Unit of Infrastructure Services Branch, Brisbane.
To receive email notification of updates to the design standards, or to comment on the application and use of these guidelines, please provide feedback.

The purpose of Master Planning in schools is to provide a logical development strategy, which supports the service delivery requirements of the school. Master planning must combine both educational and facility planning. Planning must of course also be in accordance with corporate objectives and policies and sensibly address resourcing constraints.
