Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 (Human Swine Influenza) - Important notice to parents, carers and staff

Australia moved to the 'protect External Link' phase in June to manage Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 (also known as Human Swine Influenza).

The 'protect' phase recognises that the Human Swine Influenza virus is not as severe for the general population as originally envisaged and that the majority of people who contract the virus are making a quick and full recovery.

One of the focuses of the 'protect' phase is the identification and early treatment of those people who are most at risk External Link of developing severe illness from Human Swine Influenza.

On 30 September, the Australian Government, in conjunction with the States and Territories, introduced a national program to vaccinate people who are most vulnerable to severe complications form infection with the Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Influenza Virus (Human Swine Flu).

Education Queensland is continuing to work closely with Queensland Health and will be guided by the advice provided by their medical experts in relation to any situations where action by schools would benefit the school and broader community.

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of seasonal influenza, including: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or blocked nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Interstate and International travel

In line with the decision to move to the 'protect' phase, there are no longer restrictions on study tours, or students returning from interstate and international travel.
